What is pyt?

"Pyt" is one of the most Danish words there is. It is a philosophy — a way of saying: it doesn't matter that much, let it go, move on. In 2018, pyt was voted Denmark's favourite word.

Pyt as stress relief

When something bothers you that you cannot change anyway, it drains your quality of life. You can keep a knot in your stomach — or you can say "oh well, I'll let it go" and move on.

"Letting go is really good in situations that you can't change anyway. If you have a quick temper, you need to be able to let things go." — psychologist Marie Aagaard Larsen, Samvirke

When should you say pyt?

  • You left the milk on the counter — and knocked it on the floor
  • You forgot the parking disc and got a fine
  • You said something awkward in a meeting that nobody remembers
  • You are frustrated about weather, traffic, or things outside your control

The common thread: you cannot change what happened. Pyt is about accepting it and moving on.

When should you not say pyt?

Pyt is not an excuse to avoid responsibility. You should not say pyt to everything — that would be an empty life without taking a stand on what matters.

"You should not go to the other extreme and say pyt to everything. It is not as if someone dies and you should just shrug and say pyt." — Marie Aagaard Larsen

After you let it go, ask yourself: can I learn from this? Can I avoid the situation next time? Learn from the mistake, release it, and move on.

Pyt has been covered in Danish and international media as part of Danish culture — often alongside hygge:

Let It Go — pyt in your pocket

The Let It Go app makes it easy to practice letting go. A single tap helps you release negative thoughts and focus on the positive. The app is inspired by the Danish pyt concept and integrates with Apple Health and Siri.
